Living by Lake Straussee, Strausberg
In Strausberg, near Lake Straussee, a residential complex consisting of four detached houses with 68 apartments is being built. The project includes three new buildings as well as the conversion of an administrative building into an apartment building.
The urban planning concept was developed by Zwick Architects.
The property is located within a protected landscape area. Therefore, the design and planning of the outdoor spaces is being carried out in close consultation with the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment. The aim is to preserve almost all of the existing trees.
The existing building (Building 1) originally belonged to the educational and training institution of the Provincial Association of Brandenburg-Prussia (now the Märkisch-Oderland Upper Secondary School), built in 1883. It was part of the administration and was constructed as a simple, unadorned brick building.

The urban planning and architectural goal is to integrate the existing building and the new buildings into a cohesive ensemble. Therefore, the proportions and size of the new buildings are based on those of the existing building.
Two house types were developed: House 2 along Fritz-Reuter-Straße is a municipal apartment building consisting of two houses, continuing the design of the adjacent buildings. Houses 3 and 4 are identical.
The east-west orientation of type houses 3 and 4 allowed for a compact floor plan with five residential units per floor. The apartment sizes were determined by local demand for a mix of different sized apartments.
Each residential unit has a spacious balcony or terrace and garden.
