Norddeutsche Landesbausparkasse, Braunschweig
In a construction period of 18 months, the "new pawnshop" built in neo-Gothic style by the ducal building officer Ernst Wiehe in 1891-94 was completely overhauled and expanded by the construction of a three-storey, elliptical customer hall in the former inner courtyard. The outer, closed facade, which is under monument protection, was renovated, the interior of the building was opened up extensively.
Multifunctional, transparent, flowing spaces have been created wherever possible. The central customer hall with galleries on the 1st and 2nd floor forms the focal point of the new spatial organization. The upper end is formed by the elliptical glass roof as a hanging cable mesh construction with frameless glazing, which also makes the outside world perceptible from the inside.
